Gio Lee

Senior Designer

As a Korean native, Gio Lee graduated from Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul in 1996 with a BFA degree in Interior & Environmental Design.  She continued her design education in NYC and, in 2000, received an MFA in Lighting Design from Parsons School of Design.

Her professional career began in 1996 as an exhibit designer at the Time and Space Tech, Co. Ltd. in Seoul where she created exhibit design concepts and prepared design submission packages. Ms. Lee’s career evolved into architectural lighting design when, in 2001, she began working at Domingo Gonzalez Associates where she ultimately became a Senior Designer.   She returned to Korea in 2008 and continued lighting design work there as well as teaching at Hong-Ik University School of Architecture.  Resuming her career in NYC in 2011, she joined Cooley Monato Studio as a Senior Designer responsible for design concepts, as well as project management.

In addition to projects in Korea, while she was with DGA Ms. Lee was part of the design team for the Museum of Jewish Heritage, Aeropostale (prototype proposal), and 20 Pine The Collection Condominiums to name a few. Completed projects as Senior Designer at Cooley Monato Studio include Loews Hotel NYC, and the Waldorf=Astoria renovation NYC – which won an Illumination Award of Distinction in 2014 and a Lumen Award of Citation the same year. Ms. Lee was honored with IESNA Design Awards of Merit in 2005 and in 2006.

Gio Lee is currently a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) as well as the Designers Lighting Forum on NY for which she has also been a guest speaker
